New Form Factor: Tote Drawer

Alternative Origin form factor configuration to substitute the individual shelves with drawers. Each drawer has an opening to hold a tote (similar to a trash can drawer at home with the cutout).

Problem/opportunity trying to be solved

More ergonomic way to pick using the 'drawer pull' method.

Possible Benefits:

-reduction in frame weight (i.e. allowing for more payload)
-increase in available cube
-safety; totes are secured in slots
-Ergonomic benefit for the associates

Possible Challenges:
-Ensuring drawers are closed when bot is navigating
-Multiple tote sizes - Should the drawer cutout/tote slot be adjustable?

Quantify the problem/opportunity

unknown monetary benefit

What is the root cause of the problem/opportunity

no easy/safe way to perform the drawer pull pick process on the Origin Shelving Unit, especially when filled with product

@DuPre, after reviewing with engineering it's been determined that we can not move forward with this idea, at this time. Cost, weight, design flexibility, safety, available resources are all concerns at this time.

Thanks DuPre. Erica Moyer and John Pearlman will review. We did try to develop something similar for a customer in Europe and found that the shelves were exceedingly expensive (~4X a normal shelf) and limited flexibility in payload types carried. Also as you mentioned the safety elements need to be addressed.
