Sam's Club Box shelf

Stronger shelf. One that can fit 4 Sam's cartons, sliding bottom tray or slightly slanted shelfs with a lip to hold the boxes in place or slightly narrower top shelf to make it easier to place items in the bottom level. Also able to manage the hinged shelf with 1 hand.

Problem/opportunity trying to be solved

Origin I current 30" 2-level hinged box shelf is not ideal for Sam's product mix. To be able to meet their throughput demand we must place as many boxes on the bot as possible. Sam's product tends to be bulky and heavy. Pickers are finding it difficult to put those bulky/heavy items into the cartons if they are on the top shelf and if the boxes on the bottom shelf have to be pulled out to add product.

Also the shelves are not strong enough. Top shelf is warping and not functioning. Connection to the bot mast is also breaking. We are currently ratchet strapping the shelves to bots while waiting on replacements. There is also work to add a steel brace to the bot attachment, but that will only address part of the problem.

Not able to operate hinged function with one hand.

Quantify the problem/opportunity

When site is only utilizing bottom shelf we can only manage 4/5 units per mission. When we fill the bot with 4 cartons we can get an average of 8.5 units per mission.

What is the root cause of the problem/opportunity

Bulky and heavy product requiring bigger cartons. Hard to place items in those cartons when bot is fully utilized. Weight of cartons is breaking down the shelves.
