Non-directed Putaway on Locus

The user scans a carton onto the bot. the contents of the carton are unknown. A the conclusion of the bot being loaded with the cartons with content to be putaway, the Putaway message for the Tote ID is sent to the WMS.

The WMS recognises the Tote ID as a carton to be putaway and without knowing the contents, the robot is sent to a location selected in the WMS by logic not known to Locus.

Upon receiving the putaway location message (with a custom contents segment using a generic content), the bot travels to the location and waits for the putaway user. Each item taken from the carton is scanned and the quantity entered. the user then scans the location and confirms the quantity put in the location.

This repeats until all the contents of the first carton are decanted to the location.

In the Putaway message, the units received and their location scanned are used to receipt the stock and move it to the assigned location.

Problem/opportunity trying to be solved

traditional putaway is a two-step process; book the stock in using a purchase Order/ASN then put the stock away and record the location. For some operations, the received stock can be taken to the pick location and received as it is putaway. This process is particularly useful for either aligned suppliers or suppliers of stock where there are rarely multiple lines for the one SKU.

Quantify the problem/opportunity

The difference in the cost of operating the two models (traditional vs Non-directed) of putaway has been calculated by the site. It shows savings in having users perform the two-step vs the non-directed putaway.

Given we want to allow the site to absorb more bots for non-picking activity, this process of receiving and putting the stock into locations is going to use more robots. At present, associates take trolleys full of cartons into the pick area and this has an impact on the picking operation due to poor trolley placement, people working int he aisles and disused cartons and void fill in the pick area.

What is the root cause of the problem/opportunity

The site would like to get the product into stock with the least cost. This will require Locus to record each item as it is received. This receipt will be performed at the location the stock is to be placed in.
